From Proto-Baltic *slank?-, formed by vowel gradation from Proto-Indo-European *slenk- “to cut, to twist, to wind, to meander; to crawl, to creep”. The original meaning was probably “crawler, creeper”, because of this bird's terrestrial habits and low flight. Cognates include Lithuanian slánka, slankà, slãnk?, Old Prussian slanke (large woodcock), Russian ?????? (slúka), Ukrainian ??????? (slúkva), Czech sluka, Polish s??ka, ?l?ka.
