From Middle English ellebore, from Old French ellebre, elebore, from Medieval Latin eleborus, via Latin from Ancient Greek ????????? (helléboros), possibly from ???? (álk?, “fawn”) ???????? (bibr?sk?, “to eat”). The initial h was restored in English to reflect the Ancient Greek etymology.
