Borrowed from French cochenille, itself probably from Spanish cochinilla, or from Ancient Greek ???????? (kókkinos, “red tint”), from ?????? (kókkos), from Latin coccus (“berry or grain”) (term applied to Kermes quercus, a scale insect used in the production of red dye)
