(“to commit burglary”), from Late Latin burgus (“fortified town”), probably from Frankish *burg (“fortress”), from Proto-Germanic *burgz, *burgij? (“borough, watch-tower”). The -l- may have been inserted under influence from Latin latro (“thief”).
