From French zygotène, corresponding to zyg- 'union, zygosis' (from Ancient Greek ????? (zugón, “junction, yoke”)) + -tene 'filament' (from ?????? (tainía, “band, fillet”))
Coined by Victor Grégoire in 1907 and in English by Edmund B. Wilson in 1912.
