From French zygotène, corresponding to zyg- 'union, zygosis' (from Ancient Greek ????? (zugón, junction, yoke)) + -tene 'filament' (from ?????? (tainía, band, fillet))

Coined by Victor Grégoire in 1907 and in English by Edmund B. Wilson in 1912.
