Via Middle English bacinet, bacenet, basnet, from Anglo-Norman bacynet, from Old French bacinet (“little basin”), diminutive of bassin. Klein suggests an origin from French bercelonette, itself a double diminutive of berceau (“cradle”), with influence from bassin.
