From Middle English forgeten, forgiten, foryeten, for?iten, from Old English for?ietan (“to forget”) [influenced by Old Norse geta ("to get, to guess")], from Proto-West Germanic *fragetan (“to give up, forget”). Equivalent to for- +? get.
