(“to fit with planks”) + -?tus (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *-eh?tos (suffix forming adjectives from nouns indicating the possession of a thing or a quality). Tabul? is derived from tabula (“board, plank”), of uncertain origin, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *teh?- (a variant of *steh?- (“to stand”)) + *-d?lom (a variant of *-trom (suffix forming nouns denoting tools or instruments)).
