Related to Middle Dutch tas, tasse (heap, pile, Dutch tas), Middle Low German tas (mow of hay or wheat), Gothic ???????????????????????????????? (ungatass, disorganised, irregular); and possibly also to Old High German zetten (to straw, fertilise), Old Norse tað (spread dung). See tath.
