Took on meaning of Dutch scheurbuik, French scorbut (scurvy), possibly from Old Norse skyrbjúgr, skyr (sour milk) + bjúgr (swelling, tumour) whence the Icelandic skyrbjúgur (scurvy). Compare German Scharbock, Late Latin scorbutus. Alternatively from Middle Dutch, from Middle Low German.
