Cognates include Lithuanian šãmas, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian ??? (som), Czech sumec (Old Czech som), Polish sum, Ancient Greek ????? (kámax, pile, stake) (compare Greek ?????? (kamáki, spear, harpoon)).
