Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *?ak- (“branch, stick”) (whence also sakne (q.v.)) from Proto-Indo-European *kek- / *?ek- / *kek?- / *?ek?-. Cognate with Lithuanian šaka (“branch”). Semantic development: branch > parting place of two branches > the two beams around a horse's neck. Along with šak- > sak-, there is cak-/?ak-, cf. ?aka (“a stick with an offshoot to use as its handle”) whence ?akar?t. See Russian ???? (soxa) for additional cognates.
