From Middle English kay, key, kaye, keye, from Old French kay, cail, from Gaulish *kagyum, cagiíun (enclosure), from Proto-Celtic *kagyom (pen, enclosure) (compare Welsh cae (hedge)), from Proto-Indo-European *kag?yóm (enclosure). Doublet of hedge.
