From Late Latin supernumerarius (“extra soldier added to a legion; supernumerary”), from super (“above; beyond”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h?e??s (“out of”) + *uperi (“above”), from *upo (“below, under”)) + numerum (accusative singular of numerus (“number; collection, quantity”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nem- (“to distribute; to give, take”)) + -?rius (“suffix forming adjectives from nouns or numerals”). The word is analysable as super- +? numeral +? -ary.
