The Latin nucula + -?ris adds up to nucul?ris, a term that in English becomes nucular; the Latin nuculea + -?ris, becomes Latin nucule?ris (“relative to what pertains to small nut”), later contracted into nuclear. Compare muscle and Latin m?sculus; muscular and m?scul?ris.
