From Middle English *poukel, *pukel, from Old English p?cel (“a goblin, demon, a mischievous spirit”), diminutive of p?ca (“demon, goblin, imp”), equivalent to puck +? -le. Cognate with Danish pokker (“devil, deuce”). More at puck.
