Cognate to Sanskrit ????? (mant?, “advisor, counselor”) and Latin monitor (“one who admonishes”), and perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *monéyeti (compare Latin mone? (“to warn”), causative form of *men- (“to think”).
