From Middle English kindrede, alteration (with epenthetic d) of kinrede, cünreden (“kindred”), from Old English cynr?d, cynr?den (“kindred, family, generation, posterity, stock, species”), from cynn (“kind, sort, quality, race, family, rank, gender”) + -r?den (“condition, state”), equivalent to kin +? -red.
