pandeism

English

Etymology

Possibly borrowed from German Pandeismus, from pan- (from Ancient Greek ???- (pan-, prefix meaning ‘all’)) + Deismus (deism) (from Latin deus (deity, god) + German -ismus (-ism)). (Similar words appear earlier in various languages, but apparently not in the same sense.) The word can be analysed as pan- +? deism or as a blend of pantheism +? deism.

Pronunciation

  • (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /pæn?di??z(?)m/, /-de?-/
  • (General American) IPA(key): /pæn?di?z?m/, /-de?-/
  • Hyphenation: pan?de?i?sm

Noun

  1. (religion) A belief in a god who is both pantheistic and deistic, in particular a god who designed the universe and then became it and ceased to exist separately and act consciously with respect to it.
  2. (religion, rare) Worship which admits or tolerates favourable aspects of all religions; omnitheism.
