From Renaissance Ancient Greek ?????????????? (enkuklopaideía, education in the circle of arts and sciences), a mistaken univerbated form of ????????? ??????? (enkúklios paideí?, education in the circle of arts and sciences), from ????????? (enkúklios, circular) + ??????? (paideí?, child-rearing, education). This spelling seems to have been first used by Paul Skalich in 1559, although the spelling encyclopedia goes back to at least 1517, with a work by Johannes Aventinus.
