Perhaps a back-formation from Yiddish ??????? (rebetsin, “rebbetzin, rabbi's wife”). Zamenhof's explanation that it was from German Kronprinzessin (“Crown Princess”) is thought to have been an attempt to avoid antisemitism. Reanalysed as edzo (“husband, spouse”) +? -ino (feminine suffix).
