A folk word [c. 1600s], apparently from a Norfolk dialect, of uncertain origin. Perhaps from some Low German word or from dialectal dump (lump) [late 1800s], +? -ling (diminutive suffix).

From Ukrainian ????????? pl (varényky), singular ???????? (varényk), and related terms in other languages, e.g. Russian ????????? (varéniki) and (particularly in Mennonite communities) Plautdietsch Wareniki. The Ukrainian term comes from ???????? (várenyj, boiled), from ??????? (varýty, to boil, to cook), from Old East Slavic ?????? (variti), from Proto-Slavic *variti (to cook) + masculine ending -?? (-yk). Compare ??? (var, boiling liquid; cooking, boiling), from Proto-Slavic *var?, from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to burn, blacken).
