Perhaps an alteration of wis, taken from the incorrect division of iwis (“sure(ly), certain(ly)”) from Middle English iwis, ywis (“sure(ly), certain(ly)”), from Old English ?ewis (“certain, positive, sure”)) as "I wis", which was mistaken for a verb.
