Origin uncertain, but probably from a frequentative form of Middle English *cudden, cuththen, keththen (to embrace), a variant of cuthen, kuthen, kithen (to be familiar with, make known), from Middle English cuth, couth (known, familiar), equivalent to couth +? -le.
