Perhaps of North Germanic origin, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skimpijan?. Cognate with Icelandic skimpa (“to scoff at, scorn”), German schimpfen (“to grumble, scold”), Dutch schimpen (“to mock, make fun of, scold”).
