From Middle English comete, partly from Old English com?ta and partly from Old French comete, both from Latin com?t?s, from Ancient Greek ??????? (kom?t?s, “longhaired”), short for ????? ??????? ([ast?r] kom?t?s, "longhaired [star])" and referring to the tail of a comet, from ???? (kóm?, “hair”). Compare English faxed star.
