M?ternus is derived from m?ter (“mother”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méh?t?r (“mother”)) + -rnus (suffix forming adjectives). The English word is cognate with Italian maternale, materno, Portuguese maternal, materno, Spanish maternal, materno.
