Makie: What kind of information do you have on him?

Taki Renzaburo: Well, not much, I'm afraid.

[shows her a black-and-white photo of Mayart in robes]

Taki Renzaburo: Giuseppi Mayart: a legend in both out worlds, and a great prophet. After signing the last treaty in 1851, he disappeared, he's been spotted twice since then. Once living in the ruins of Pompeii and again somewhere in the heart of the Apollonian Mountains. They say he's absolutely essential for the success of this treaty.

Makie: I hope everything goes smoothly before the meeting.

Taki Renzaburo: For the life of me, I can't figure out why you're my partner. But your fighting ability's certainly up to par.

Makie: What you mean is why your partner is a woman of the Black World.

Taki Renzaburo: Good of you to mention it, I haven't had a particularly wonderful experience with them.

Makie: Whatever it was, I'm sure it was merited.

Taki Renzaburo: Uh, yeah.

Makie: I never requested you as my partner in the first place. And where I come from, when we're given an order, we tend to obey it.

Taki Renzaburo: Good, I'm glad to hear it. Because there's nothing we can do about it till we finish the job.

Makie: That's right.

[first lines]

Taki Renzaburo: [narrating] We live in an era when our cities are armed with steel and concrete. Computers and electronics barricade our minds. It doesn't change the fact that there exist a lot of strange phenomenon, bizarre beyond reason, or logic. Most folks just don't see them. That's because we cling to order - to any tiny happiness that comes our way, and we bust our humps to blind ourselves with our desires and our pleasures. There's a world of darkness out there, beyond time or space... a world filled with evil that is undeniably real. And in that world... there are things that run wild.

Taki Renzaburo: [narrating] Human beings have stumbled through history, occasionally making contact with what we call "The Black World". Most of the people on both sides of the continuum have wanted to exchange insights, information - to live peacefully with each other. But, in spite of a lot of folk's good intentions, bloody fights have broken out from time to time between the two sides. Things got so bad that finally, representatives from both worlds ironed out a contract that allowed everyone to live together without stepping on each other's toes - sort of a non-aggression pact; a treaty. And every so often, that treaty is renewed, and the ceasefire continues without a break. So, here we are, at the end of the 20th Century, and they're about to conclude a new peace treaty... right here in Tokyo.

Taki Renzaburo: [watching Kanako take her bra off] Uh... I, er, I didn't know you were in such a hurry.

Kanako: I hope you don't mind?

Taki Renzaburo: No. Why would I mind about that? Soon as my heart stops pounding, I'll be just fine.

Kanako: [chuckles, then unzips Taki's fly] He's a healthy one. Let me see if I can wake him...

[gives him a blowjob]

Taki Renzaburo: [narrating] My God! Has this wild woman been hiding under that demure exterior all this time? I mean, it's not exactly what I was expecting, but then again... there are worse things.

[Makie has just saved Taki from some demons]

Taki Renzaburo: You're forbidden to leave your hotel room.

[flips through the magazine and finds another page]

[Mayart angrily throws the magazine at them, and misses]

Mayart (USA dub): [mumbling] Absolute young pain in the butt.

Taki Renzaburo: Mr. Mayart, just for tonight, I'm asking you to stay in this room quietly, and sleep.

Mayart (USA dub): I won't! I'm makin' a protest! I refuse to sleep with anyone. You can go to hell in a handbasket, but I'm not sleeping with a man in the same room!

Taki Renzaburo: Sir, you are perfectly welcome not to sleep.

Mayart (USA dub): [grumbles with shock] What? You've got a nerve, ya bum! Without me there'd be no peace ceremony - finito! Then, you've got the gall put me in this flophouse, and I hate that!

Taki Renzaburo: Under this flophouse is where the psy-waves vibrate stronger than anywhere in Tokyo. The Radicals that are breaking through the continuum can't even get within spitting distance.

Mayart (USA dub): [referring to Makie] If the waves are that strong, how come she's here?

Taki Renzaburo: Even though she's from the other side, she's been given special training by the Black Guard specifically to withstand the waves.

Mayart (USA dub): Okay! I guess I can take it here if I get to stay alone with her! Hm-hm! That, of course, means you'll be sleeping outside.

[Taki angrily approaches Mayart, but Makie stops him]

Makie: Okay. I'll sleep here.

Mayart (USA dub): Ah... well, I'll be! I'm finally gonna have a taste of a Black World girl!

[chuckles mischievously]

Taki Renzaburo: Don't let him pull anything. And if he makes any move at all, just tie him up on the sofa, or something. If you need me, I'll be downstairs.

[Taki leaves the room]

Hodgkins (USA dub): Hm - Giuseppi Mayart? Of course. Secretly came to Japan about twenty years ago, and he hasn't changed a bit. I don't know, though...

Taki Renzaburo: What'ser matter?

Hodgkins (USA dub): I'm not sure, but, I wonder if he's the real one. I could be wrong, but I've got a strong feeling that... well, I'm afraid he may be a decoy.

Hodgkins (USA dub): It's possible. That'd make concentrate our firepower on him while the Radicals snuck by. Jesus.

[Taki and Hodgkins are having tea and sandwiches after having played several games of chess]

Taki Renzaburo: [while munching] Well... have to say, you're a persistent bugger.

Hodgkins (USA dub): What's that? Don't be absurd! I'm just helping you kill some time!

Taki Renzaburo: [regarding Mayart] How is he?

Clinic Director: That man has an amazing resilience. I expect he's going to recover in approximately half an hour.

Taki Renzaburo: What kind of psychic resistance barriers do you have here?

Clinic Director: The "Spiritual Shell", as we refer to it, has an over twenty-point factor. Don't worry - I heard about what happened to Teito Hotel, and it isn't going to happen here, I can assure you.

[pushes his glasses up his nose]

Clinic Director: Mm-hm. If I may be so immodest, we have rather successfully fought off their attacks for 500 years now.

Taki Renzaburo: Very impressive.

[last lines]

Taki Renzaburo: [narrating] It's finally dawn of the longest night of my life... a morning so beautiful it hurts. As my friends Hodgkins said, I'll know what I'm really protecting when I find it. Well... I guess I found it. And in her body, my child - our child - is growing, giving her a power that's never been seen before. Y'know, I have a feeling the kid's gonna be big, 'cause it'll have the future of both our worlds on its shoulders someday. Oh, yeah - I got my old job back. It's gonna be a while before our kid can save the world, so, er, until then... I think I'm gonna stay a Black Guard.

Makie: Taki...

Taki Renzaburo: Don't say anything, please. It wasn't your fault. Everything I did was of my own free will.

Makie: This isn't the right sort of job for a romantic.

Taki Renzaburo: Maybe not. But it was the right kind of job for me.
