Padmé Quotes in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Padmé: Are you sure about this? Trusting our fate to a boy we hardly know? The Queen will not approve.
Qui-Gon Jinn: The Queen does not need to know.
Padmé: Well, I don't approve.
Padmé: You assume too much.
Padmé: So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause.
Padmé: Anakin, I was so worried about you! Obi-Wan... told me terrible things!
Anakin Skywalker: What things?
Padmé: He said... you turned to the Dark Side. That you... killed Younglings!
Anakin Skywalker: Obi-Wan is trying to turn you against me.
Padmé: He cares about us.
Anakin Skywalker: Us?
Padmé: He knows. He wants to help you. Anakin, all I want is your love.
Anakin Skywalker: Love won't save you, Padme. Only my new powers can do that!
Padmé: But at what cost? You're a good person, don't do this!
Anakin Skywalker: I won't lose you the way I lost my mother. I am becoming more powerful than any Jedi has ever dreamed of, and I'm doing it for you. To protect you.
Padmé: Come away with me. Help me raise our child far away. Leave everything else behind while we still can!
Anakin Skywalker: No. Don't you see? We don't have to run away anymore! We no longer have to hide our love for each other. I am more powerful than the Chancellor, I... I can overthrow him! And together, you and I can rule the galaxy! We can make things the way we want them to be!
Padmé: I don't believe what I'm hearing! Obi-Wan was right... you've changed! You have turned to the dark side! You're not Anakin anymore!
Anakin Skywalker: [with a growing angry look and voice] I don't want to hear any more about Obi-Wan. The Jedi turned against me. Don't you turn against me!
Padmé: [crying] Anakin, you're breaking my heart! You're going down a path I cannot follow!
Anakin Skywalker: Because of Obi-Wan?
Padmé: Because of what you've done... what you plan to do! Stop! Stop now... come back... I love you!
[Anakin looks beside Padme and sees Obi-Wan standing at the ship's exit overhearing them]
Anakin Skywalker: [enraged and paranoid] Liar! You're with him! You brought him here to kill me!
The Emperor: [to the Senate] In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society which I assure you will last for ten thousand years.
[Senate fills with enormous applause]
Padmé: [to Bail Organa] So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.
Padmé: Obi-Wan... there... is good in him. I know there is... still...
Obi-Wan Kenobi: [referring to Anakin] When is the last time you saw him?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Do you know where he is now?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Padmé, I need your help. He is in grave danger.
Padmé: From the Sith?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: From himself. Padmé, Anakin has turned to the Dark Side.
Padmé: You're wrong! How could you even SAY that?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: I have seen a security hologram... of him... killing Younglings.
Padmé: No! Not Anakin! He couldn't...
Obi-Wan Kenobi: He was decieved by a lie... we all were. It appears that the Chancellor is behind everything, including the war! After the death of Count Dooku, Anakin became his new apprentice.
Padmé: I don't believe you. I can't...
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Padmé, I must find him.
Padmé: You're going to kill him, aren't you?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: He has become a very great threat.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: [He gets off of the couch, walking towards his ship] Anakin is the father, isn't he?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: [Padmé doesn't know what to say] I'm so sorry.
Anakin Skywalker: You are so... beautiful.
Padmé: It's only because I'm so in love.
Anakin Skywalker: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
Padmé: So love has blinded you?
Anakin Skywalker: [laughs] Well, that's not exactly what I meant.
Padmé: But it's probably true.
Anakin Skywalker: Are you all right? You're trembling. What's going on?
Padmé: Something wonderful has happened. Ani, I'm pregnant.
[Captain Typho is trying to talk Padme out of leaving Coruscant without protection]
Captain Typho: My Lady, let me come with you.
Padmé: There is no danger. The fighting is over, and... this is personal.
Captain Typho: As you wish, My Lady... but I strongly disagree.
Padmé: I'll be all right, Captain. This is something I must do myself. Besides, Threepio will look after me.
C-3PO: Oh, dear.
[Typho leaves; Padme and C-3PO board the Naboo skiff; Obi-Wan sneaks on board]
Padmé: What if the democracy we thought we were serving no longer exists, and the Republic has become the very evil we have been fighting to destroy?
Padmé: Obi-Wan? Is Anakin all right?
[Obi-Wan looks at her sadly and does not answer. He brushes her hair back. Padme drops back into unconsciousness]
C-3PO: My lady, is there anything I might do?
Padmé: No, thank you, 3P0.
C-3PO: [walking away] I feel so helpless.
Padmé: Hold me, like you did by the lake on Naboo; so long ago when there was nothing but our love. No politics, no plotting, no war.
Anakin Skywalker: I feel lost.
Anakin Skywalker: Obi-Wan and the Council don't trust me.
Padmé: They trust you with their lives.
Anakin Skywalker: Something's happening. I'm not the Jedi I should be. I want more. And I know I shouldn't.
Padmé: This war represents a failure to listen. Now you're closer to the Chancellor than anyone! Please, ask him to end this war and let diplomacy resume.
[Anakin and Padme are about to be carted into the arena]
Anakin: Don't be afraid.
Padme: I'm not afraid to die. I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life.
Anakin: What are you talking about?
Padme: I love you.
Anakin: You love me? I thought we had decided not to fall in love. That we'd be forced to live a lie and that it would destroy our lives.
Padme: I think our lives are about to be destroyed anyway. I truly... deeply... love you and before we die I want you to know.
Anakin: When I got to them we got into aggressive negotiations.
Padme: Aggressive negotiations? What's that?
Anakin: Ah, well, it's negotiations with a lightsaber.
Padme: We used to come here for school retreat. We would swim to that island every day. I love the water. We used to lie out on the sand and let the sun dry us and try to guess the names of the birds singing.
Anakin: I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.
Anakin: You call this a diplomatic solution?
Padme: No, I call it aggressive negotiations.
Padme: You're making fun of me!
Anakin: Oh, no, I'd be too frightened to tease a senator!
Padme: Please don't look at me like that.
Anakin: Why not?
Padme: Because it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Anakin: Sorry my lady.
Anakin: If you are suffering as much as I am, please tell me.
Padme: I can't... We can't... It's not possible.
Anakin: Anything is possible, Padme, listen to me.
Padme: No you listen! We live in a real world, come back to it. You're studying to become a Jedi, I'm... I'm a senator. If you follow your thoughts through to conclusion, it will take us to a place we cannot go, regardless of the way we feel about each other.
Anakin: Then you do feel something!
Padme: I will not let you give up your future for me.
Anakin: You're asking me to be rational. That is something that I know I cannot do. Believe me, I wish I could just wish away my feelings, but I can't.
Padme: To be angry is to be human.
Anakin: I'm a Jedi. I can be better than this.
Padme: It must be difficult having sworn your life to the Jedi... not being able to visit the places you like... or do the things you like.
Anakin: Or be with the people I love.
Padme: Are you allowed to love? I thought that was forbidden for a Jedi.
Padme: Ani? My goodness, you've grown.
Anakin: So have you, grown more beautiful... for a senator, I mean.
Padme: Ani, you'll always be that little boy I knew on Tatooine.
Anakin: It doesn't have to be that way. We could keep it a secret.
Padme: We'd be living a lie. One we couldn't keep, even if we wanted to. I couldn't do that. Could you, Anakin? Could you live like that?
Padme: I do not like this idea of hiding.
Anakin: Sometimes we must do what is requested of us.
Padme: We'd be living a lie. I couldn't do that. Could you Ani?
Padme: All mentors have a way of seeing more of our faults than we would like. It's the only way we grow.
Palpatine: Master Jedi, may I suggest the Senator be placed under the protection of your graces.
Sen. Bail Organa: You really think that is a wise decision during these stressful times?
Padme: Chancellor, if I may comment, I do not believe...
Palpatine: The situation is that serious? Oh, but I do, Senator. I realize all too well that additional security might be disruptive for you, but... perhaps someone you're familiar with. An old friend, like... Master Kenobi.
Padme: Do you have any idea who's behind these attacks?
Padme: You'll be fine.
DormÈ: It's not me, M'lady. I'm worried about you. What if they realize you left the capital?
Padme: [regarding Anakin] Well, then my Jedi protector will have to prove how good he is.
Padme: We live in a real world, Ani. Come back to it.
C-3PO: Master Owen, may I present two most important visitors?
Anakin: I'm Anakin Skywalker.
Owen Lars: [intrigued, but wary, tone] Owen Lars. This is my girlfriend, Beru.
Padme: I'm Padme.
Owen Lars: Well... I guess I'm your stepbrother. I had a feeling you might show up someday.
Anakin: Is my mother here?
[a one-legged Cliegg Lars appears]
Cliegg Lars: No, she's not. Cliegg Lars. Shmi is my wife. Come inside, we've got a lot to talk about.
Padme: Sometimes there are things no one can fix.
Padme: If the Senate votes to create an army, I'm sure it's going to push us into a civil war.
Gov. Sio Bibble: It's unthinkable! There hasn't been a full-scale war since the formation of the Republic!
Queen Jamillia: Do you seen any way to bring the Seperatists back into the Republic through negotations?
Padme: Not if they feel threatened. My guess is that they will turn to the Trade Federation or even the Commerce Guilds for help.
Gov. Sio Bibble: It's hard to belive that after four trials in the Supreme Court, Nute Gunray is still the viceroy of the Trade Federation. I feel that the senate is powerless to prevent this crisis from getting any further.
Obi-Wan: It's a great pleasure to see you again, milady.
Padme: It has been far too long, Master Kenobi. Ani? My goodness you've grown.
Anakin: So have you. Grown more beautiful, I mean. Well, for a Senator I mean.
Queen Jamillia: We have to keep out faith in the Republic. The day we stop believing democracy can work is the day we lose it.
Padme: Let's pray that day never comes.
