Makie: What kind of information do you have on him?

Taki Renzaburo: Well, not much, I'm afraid.

[shows her a black-and-white photo of Mayart in robes]

Taki Renzaburo: Giuseppi Mayart: a legend in both out worlds, and a great prophet. After signing the last treaty in 1851, he disappeared, he's been spotted twice since then. Once living in the ruins of Pompeii and again somewhere in the heart of the Apollonian Mountains. They say he's absolutely essential for the success of this treaty.

Makie: I hope everything goes smoothly before the meeting.

Taki Renzaburo: For the life of me, I can't figure out why you're my partner. But your fighting ability's certainly up to par.

Makie: What you mean is why your partner is a woman of the Black World.

Taki Renzaburo: Good of you to mention it, I haven't had a particularly wonderful experience with them.

Makie: Whatever it was, I'm sure it was merited.

Taki Renzaburo: Uh, yeah.

Makie: I never requested you as my partner in the first place. And where I come from, when we're given an order, we tend to obey it.

Taki Renzaburo: Good, I'm glad to hear it. Because there's nothing we can do about it till we finish the job.

Makie: That's right.

Jin: Hey, it's me Makie.

[takes off his sunglasses]

Makie: [gasps] Jin?

Jin: Hmm. Very attractive look you've put together with the flesh of this world, I almost didn't recognize that pretty face.

[drops his sunglasses to the ground]

Jin: You still have that stupid habit of hanging around with the human trash.

[steps on the sunglasses, breaking them]

Jin: Traitor.

[Makie takes a few swipes at him but he dodges them all, he then restrains her by holding her arms out]

Jin: Why do you betray us? Say it! Human beings are lower-class creatures compared to us, and we both know it! They're only fit for slave work, that's their heritage! Why don't you get rid of that silly idea of ours being equals?

Makie: I wouldn't expect an animal like you to understand me!

[Jin throws her on the bed, she swips at him but he jumps on top of her]

Jin: Hmm. Some things never change, 'cause you're as strong-willed as ever. I should have made you mind that other time by force the way I wanted to.

Jin: If you believe you can have my heart by taking my body, then you're mistaken. It'll never be yours.

Jin: I'm the one on top. I wouldn't be so sure just yet.

[forcibly kisses her]

[Makie has just saved Taki from some demons]

Taki Renzaburo: Well, for a new partner, your timing's good. Thanks for my life.

Makie: I'm told you're a brilliant fighter, but the facts speak a little differently. Pity.

Taki Renzaburo: Can't say you haven't got an opinion. My name...

Makie: [cuts him off] Is Taki Renzaburo. Twenty-eight years old. Height, six feet, one-and-a-half inches. Weight, one seventy-six. Blood type, AB. Official cover, electrical equipment salesman. Salary, twenty-four hundred a month. No wife, no children.

Taki Renzaburo: Very impressive! Not bad. How about some of your measurements, or is that prime?

Makie: Makie. No family name. My cover in this world is fashion modelling. But because I have no sponsor, the other models refuse to work with me, and so I've remained somewhat obscure.

Taki Renzaburo: Obscure, huh? Maybe there's some other reason they love to hate you. Could it be that you're obnoxiously perfect?

Makie: Thanks, I suppose I should be flattered. Let's go pick up Mr. Mayart, shall we? Since he's probably arrived by now.

Taki Renzaburo: There ya go - being perfect again; it really is disgusting! But I can't say I'm not glad to meet you.

Taki Renzaburo: [on Mayart] Is he okay?

Makie: He keeps asking me if I "wanna see a porno film".

Taki Renzaburo: Mr. Mayart, just for tonight, I'm asking you to stay in this room quietly, and sleep.

Mayart (USA dub): I won't! I'm makin' a protest! I refuse to sleep with anyone. You can go to hell in a handbasket, but I'm not sleeping with a man in the same room!

Taki Renzaburo: Sir, you are perfectly welcome not to sleep.

Mayart (USA dub): [grumbles with shock] What? You've got a nerve, ya bum! Without me there'd be no peace ceremony - finito! Then, you've got the gall put me in this flophouse, and I hate that!

Taki Renzaburo: Under this flophouse is where the psy-waves vibrate stronger than anywhere in Tokyo. The Radicals that are breaking through the continuum can't even get within spitting distance.

Mayart (USA dub): [referring to Makie] If the waves are that strong, how come she's here?

Taki Renzaburo: Even though she's from the other side, she's been given special training by the Black Guard specifically to withstand the waves.

Mayart (USA dub): Okay! I guess I can take it here if I get to stay alone with her! Hm-hm! That, of course, means you'll be sleeping outside.

[Taki angrily approaches Mayart, but Makie stops him]

Makie: Okay. I'll sleep here.

Mayart (USA dub): Ah... well, I'll be! I'm finally gonna have a taste of a Black World girl!

[chuckles mischievously]

Taki Renzaburo: Don't let him pull anything. And if he makes any move at all, just tie him up on the sofa, or something. If you need me, I'll be downstairs.

Mayart (USA dub): [annoyed] Wha...? But I'm not... grrrh! Tie me up, will you? Rrrrgh...

[Taki leaves the room]

Mayart (USA dub): Why, you! Come back here, you coward! Oh, afraid to face me, eh?

Taki Renzaburo: [waking up after making love with Makie] Could this be a dream?

Makie: If it is a dream... I pray that we never wake up.

[sheds a single tear]

Taki Renzaburo: Are you *crying?*

Makie: I suppose I am. But the people of the Black World aren't supposed to be able to. I'm afraid - why am I able to cry when no one else of my race can?

[unable to answer, Taki kisses her eyelid]

Makie: Taki...

Taki Renzaburo: Don't say anything, please. It wasn't your fault. Everything I did was of my own free will.

Makie: This isn't the right sort of job for a romantic.

Taki Renzaburo: Maybe not. But it was the right kind of job for me.

[Makie smiles, realising she's falling for Taki]
