Faramir Quotes:

  • [from extended version]

Pippin: [to himself] What were you thinking, Peregrin Took? What service could a Hobbit offer such a great lord of men?

Faramir: [approaching] It was well done. Generous deeds should not be checked by cold council. You are to join the tower guard?

Pippin: I didn't think they would find any livery that would fit me.

Faramir: It once belonged to a boy of the citadel. A very foolish one; who spent many hours slaying dragons instead of attending to his studies.

    Pippin: This was yours?

Faramir: Yes, it was mine. My father had it made for me.

Pippin: Well, I'm taller than you were then. Though I'm not likely to grow anymore... except sideways.

    [they laugh]

Faramir: Never fitted me either. Boromir was always the soldier. They were so alike, he and my father. Proud... stubborn, even. But strong.

Pippin: I think you have strength, of a different kind. And one day your father will see it.

  • Gandalf: Faramir!

    [Running after Faramir]

Gandalf: Faramir! Your father's will has turned to madness. Do not throw away your life so rashly.

Faramir: Where does my allegiance lie if not here? This is the city of the men of Numenor. I would gladly give my life to defend her beauty, her memory... her wisdom...

Gandalf: Your father loves you, Faramir. He will remember it before the end.

  • [extended version, the Houses of Healing]

Eowyn: The city has fallen silent. There is no warmth left in the sun.

Faramir: [approaching her] It is only the damp of the first spring rain.

    [Eowyn looks up at him]

Faramir: I do not believe this darkness will endure.

  • Denethor: Is there a captain here who still has the courage to do his lord's will?

Faramir: You wish now that our places had been exchanged... that I had died and Boromir had lived.

    Denethor: Yes.

    [whispering]

    Denethor: I wish that.

Faramir: Since you are robbed of Boromir... I will do what I can in his stead.

    [Bows and turns to leave]

Faramir: If I should return, think better of me, Father.

Denethor: That will depend on the manner of your return.

  • Faramir: Mithrandir! They broke through our defenses! They've taken the bridge and the west bank. Battalions of Orcs are crossing the river.

Irolas: It is as the Lord Denethor predicted. Long has he forseen this doom.

    Gandalf: Forseen and done nothing!

  • Gandalf: Faramir? This is not the first halfing to have crossed your path.

    Faramir: No.

Pippin: You've seen Frodo and Sam?

    Gandalf: Where? When?

Faramir: In Ithilien. Not two days ago. Gandalf, they're taking the road to the Morgul Vale.

Gandalf: And then the pass of Cirith Ungol.

Pippin: What does that mean? What's wrong?

    Gandalf: Faramir, tell me everything.

  • Denethor: [to Faramir, about his loyalty] Ever you desire to appear lordly and gracious as a king of old. Boromir would have remembered his father's need. He would have brought me a kingly gift.

Faramir: Boromir would not have brought the Ring. He would have stretched out his hand to this thing, and taking it, he would have fallen.

Denethor: You know nothing of this matter!

Faramir: He would have kept it for his own! And when he returned, you would not have known your son.

Denethor: [jumping up angrily] Boromir was loyal to me! Not some wizard's pupil!

[Denethor cries and falls back into his chair; Faramir approaches him]

    Faramir: Father?

[Denethor looks over Faramir's shoulder and smiles]

    Denethor: My son!

[an image of Boromir appears behind Faramir. Boromir smiles and then the image fades. Denethor is left looking at Faramir. His mood shifts back to anger]

    Denethor: Leave me!

    [Faramir hesitates and departs]

  • Faramir: [to Frodo] The enemy?

[walks to a dead Haradrim soldier, and turns him over with his foot]

Faramir: His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is... where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there... n peace. War will make corpses of us all.

  • Gollum: [Sméagol is sobbing] Sméagol... Why does he cry, Sméagol?

Smeagol: Cruel men hurts us. Master tricksed us.

Gollum: Of course he did. I told you he was tricksy. I told you he was false.

Smeagol: Master is our friend... our friend.

    Gollum: Master betrayed us.

Smeagol: No, not it's business. Leave us alone.

Gollum: Filthy little hobbites. They stole it from us.

    Smeagol: No... No.

    Faramir: What did they steal?

    Gollum: Myyy PRECIOUSSS.

    [shrieks]

  • Faramir: [to Frodo and Sam] My men tell me that you are Orc spies.

Sam: Spies! Now wait just a minute!

Faramir: Well, if you're not spies, then who are you?

[they remain silent, Faramir sighs and sits]

    Faramir: Speak!

Frodo: We are Hobbits of the Shire. Frodo Baggins is my name and this is Samwise Gamgee.

    Faramir: Your bodyguard?

    Sam: His gardener.

Faramir: And where is your skulking friend? That gangrel creature. He had an ill-favoured look.

Frodo: [reluctant] There was no other. We set out from Rivendell with seven companions. One we lost in Moria. Two were my kin. A dwarf there was also. And an elf. And two men. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and Boromir of Gondor.

Faramir: [solemn] You are a friend of Boromir?

    Frodo: Yes, for my part.

Faramir: It would grieve you then to learn that he is dead.

    Frodo: [shocked] Dead? How? When?

Faramir: As one of his companions, I had hope you would tell me. He was my brother.

  • Faramir: I think at last we understand one another, Frodo Baggins.

Madril: You know the laws of our country - the laws of your father. If you let them go your life will be forfeit.

Faramir: Then it is forfeit. Release them.

  • Faramir: [to Frodo] So this is the answer to all the riddles: here in the wild I have you, two Halflings and a host of men at my call, and the Ring of Power within my grasp.

  • [Sméagol is being tortured by Faramir's henchmen]

    Smeagol: OOHH-WHHHHAAAAAAHHHHH! Oh!

[the guards yell and kick him as Faramir calmly stands in the distance]

    Smeagol: OW-Whaaa! Oh!

[tries to scamper away on all fours, hyperventilating. Before Sméagol can escape, one of the men grabs him by the ankle and drags him back]

    Smeagol: OOOH-AAAHHH! AhHAAAAA! AAHHHH!

[One of the guards holds up Sméagol while the other guard punches Sméagol in the stomach]

    Faramir: That's enough.

[the guard throws Sméagol against the wall, who then crawls into a corner fearfully]

Faramir: [icily] Where are you leading them?

[curls up into a fetal position as he sobs]

    Faramir: Answer me!

    [continues to cry]

Gollum: [Alter Ego Gollum pets Sméagol on the shoulder] Sméagol... Why does it cry, Sméagol?

Smeagol: Cruel men hurts us. Master tricks us.

Gollum: Of course, he did. I told you he was tricksy, I told you he was false.

Smeagol: Master is our friend, our friend.

    Gollum: Master betrayed us!

Smeagol: [cowering away from Gollum] No! Nobody's business! Leave us alone!

Gollum: Filthy little hobbitses! They stole it from us!

    Smeagol: [crying] No... NO!

    Faramir: What did they steal?

  • [after Boromir's inspiring speech]

Faramir: Good speech. Nice and short.

Boromir: Leaves more time for drinking!

  • Sam: Captain Faramir, you have shown your quality, sir - the very highest.

Faramir: The Shire must truly be a great realm, Master Gamgee, where gardeners are held in high honor.

  • Sam: We're innocent travelers.

Faramir: There are no travelers in this land... only servants of the Dark Lord.

Frodo: We are bound to an errand of secrecy. Those who claim to oppose the enemy would do well not to hinder us.

  • [In Extended Edition]

Faramir: [to Frodo] Where will you go to reach there, Frodo?

Frodo: Gollum says there is a tunnel above Minas Morgul. It climbs up into the mountains.

    Faramir: Cirith Ungol?

[Faramir notices Gollum is acting suspiciously. He slams him to the wall. Gollum inhales and gags in surprised horror and pain over being choked]

Faramir: [fiercely] Is that its name?

Gollum: [shaking his head vigorously; yowling like a cat] No, no!

[Faramir tightens his grip on Gollum's neck. Gollum winces in pain and gasps]

Gollum: [in a pitiful squawk of a voice] Y-YES!
