Aal is the original word for eel used in the present-day Netherlands, while the word paling came from Belgium. Paling is also in use in the Netherlands, but certain fishing villages in the Netherlands such as Volendam will always use aal when referring to eel. In some regions aal always denotes a juvenile whereas paling is exclusively used for adult specimen.
