Bess: [gently] Oh no. You will be careful, won't ye?

Much-the-Miller's-Son: Ha, of course I will!

[Matthew walks in dressed as Martha]

Bess: Matthew?

Matthew: Mom!

Chester: Martha!

Bess: Chester?

Chester: Bess!

Bess: [answers the car phone] Hello. Yeah, yeah, he's right here. Hold on. Chester, it's Martha.

Chester: [drives off the road]

Bess: Chester!

Chester: I'm sorry. I thought I saw a raccoon.

[takes the phone]

Chester: Martha, why are you calling me?

Matthew: Would you rather I call my mother, Chester?

Chester: [laughingly] No, no, no, no, no, no.

Matthew: Listen, Chester, I'm in big trouble. I'm at the Mullen's house. Mrs. Mullen took all the girls to her house after practice. She insisted that I go with them.

Chester: Well, just have your ice cream and cake and go home.

[laughs nervously]

Matthew: Oh, listen, genius, if it was that simple, I wouldn't have called you.

Matthew: Now all the girls are going skinny-dipping.

Chester: [drives off the road again] I tell you, Bess, those raccoons are all over the place.

Bess: Oh, you are a great salesman, Chester, but I'm finished buying your bullshit. Now, get out of here!

Bess: You have a visitor in there, a Miss Sophie De Vega.

Lou Peckinpaugh: Pretty?

Bess: Prettier than me, but I'm easier.

Lou Peckinpaugh: I'm saving you for the rainy season.

Bess: Hold onto your hat. Vladimir Tserijemiwtz is Ezra C.V. Mildew Dezire Jr.!

Lou Peckinpaugh: Wait a minute. Tserijemiwtz has two T's. The name you come up with don't have none.

Bess: That was the whole key. Some people spell the Czar of Russia T-S-A-R. But in America we spell it C-Z-A-R.

Lou Peckinpaugh: Any fool knows that.

Bess: So when I tried the American spelling, I came up with Ezra...

[the phone rings]

Bess: [into phone] Hello? - Yes, he is. Who's calling, please?

Lou Peckinpaugh: I told you not to repeat it!

Lou Peckinpaugh: Don't be stubborn, you crazy Frenchman. Time is on their side!

Bess: I don't think he's being stubborn - I think he's being dead!

Lou Peckinpaugh: Just once I'd like to see somebody die *regular* on this case!

Bess: Well, as they say at the bureau, you have to seize life before it seizes you.

Parker Concorde: Thank you.

Bess: You're welcome, but what for?
