Atreyu Quotes:

  • G'mork: If you come any closer, I will rip you to shreds.

    Atreyu: Who are you?

G'mork: I am G'mork. And you, whoever you are, can have the honor of being my last victim.

Atreyu: I will not die easily. I am a warrior!

G'mork: Ha! Brave warrior, then fight the Nothing.

Atreyu: But I can't! I can't get beyond the boundaries of Fantasia!

[G'mork laughs and Atreyu gets a little angry]

Atreyu: What's so funny about that?

    G'mork: Fantasia has no boundaries.

    [laughs]

Atreyu: That's not true! You're lying.

G'mork: Foolish boy. Don't you know anything about Fantasia? It's the world of human fantasy. Every part, every creature of it, is a piece of the dreams and hopes of mankind. Therefore, it has no boundaries.

Atreyu: But why is Fantasia dying, then?

G'mork: Because people have begun to lose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the Nothing grows stronger.

    Atreyu: What is the Nothing?

G'mork: It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair, destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.

    Atreyu: But why?

G'mork: Because people who have no hopes are easy to control; and whoever has the control... has the power!

    Atreyu: Who are you, really?

G'mork: I am the servant of the power behind the Nothing. I was sent to kill the only one who could have stopped the Nothing. I lost him in the Swamps of Sadness. His name... was Atreyu.

Atreyu: [the ground shakes again and Atreyu is knocked down. He grabs a knife shaped piece of broken stone and stands up, ready to fight] If we're about to die anyway, I'd rather die fighting! Come for me, G'mork! *I* am Atreyu!

  • Atreyu: What will happen if he doesn't appear?

The Childlike Empress: [sadly] Then our world will disappear - and so will I.

Atreyu: How could he let that happen?

The Childlike Empress: He doesn't understand that he's the one who has the power to stop it. He simply can't imagine that one little boy could be that important.

    Bastian: Is it really me?

Atreyu: Maybe he doesn't know what he has to do!

Bastian: [shouts] What DO I have to do?

The Childlike Empress: He has to give me a new name. He's already chosen it. He just has to call it out.

  • The Childlike Empress: It was the only way to get in touch with an earthling.

Atreyu: But I didn't get in touch with an earthling!

The Childlike Empress: Yes, you did. He has suffered with you. He went through everything you went through; and now, he has come here with you. He is very close... listening to every word, we say.

Bastian: [as he is reading, Bastian can't believe it] *What*?

  • Atreyu: Do you have a cold?

Morla, the Ancient One: No, we are allergic to youth.

  • The Southern Oracle: [as Atreyu approaches the Glowing Blue Sphinx Statues that resemble the ones from the First Gate] Do not be afraid! We will not harm you! We have been waiting for you a long time, Atreyu!

Atreyu: Are you the Southern Oracle?

The Southern Oracle: Yes! We are!

Atreyu: Then you must know what can save Fantasia?

The Southern Oracle: Yes! We do!

Atreyu: Well! What is it? I have to know!

The Southern Oracle: The Empress! Needs a new name!

Atreyu: A new name? That's all but that's easy. I can give her any name she wants!

The Southern Oracle: No one from Fantasia can do it! Only a human child can give her this new name!

Atreyu: [Noticing the statues starting to crumble] A human child! Where can I find one?

The Southern Oracle: You can only find one beyond the Boundaries of Fantasia! If you want to save our world, you must hurry! We don't know how much longer we can withstand The Nothing!

Atreyu: [Realizing that he has no time left to lose, starts running back] FALKOR!

  • Atreyu: You've already brought me the entire 10000 miles?

    Falcor: No, only 9891.

  • Engywook: My name is Engywook - and she's Urgl. Ever heard of me?

    Atreyu: I don't think so.

Engywook: You don't move in scientific circles.

  • Falcor: I like children.

    Atreyu: [nervously] For breakfast?

  • Atreyu: I came here to find the Southern Oracle.

    Engywook: Oooh!

    Urgl: Here we go again.

Engywook: You've come to the right place my boy. I am somewhat of an expert on the Southern Oracle.

Urgl: [mimicking Engywook] It's my scientific specie-ality.

    Engywook: It's my scientific specie-ality.

Urgl: Why don't you- sit down and be quiet for once?

Engywook: You keep quiet, wench! It's now my turn.

  • Atreyu: If you don't tell me, and the Nothing keeps coming, you will die too, both of you!

Morla, the Ancient One: Die? Now that, at least, would be *something*.

  • Atreyu: Is that the Southern Oracle?

Engywook: No, it's the first of the two gates you must pass through before you reach the Southern Oracle, and get me the final information for my book! Of course, most people don't get that far...

  • Atreyu: Do you suppose the Ivory Tower is still standing?

Falcor: Let's hope so, Atreyu, let's hope so.

  • Bastian Bux: Atreyu, get real.

Atreyu: But I am real. What do you mean by "getting real?"

Bastian Bux: Nothing. It's a joke.

Atreyu: Being real is a joke in your world?

  • Bastian Bux: [holds up a hand] Give me five.

    Atreyu: Five what?

    Bastian Bux: Forget it.

  • Atreyu: Bastian made a wish, didn't he?

Falkor: He gave up a very special memory.

Atreyu: [to Bastian] Your mother would've been proud.

    Bastian Bux: [confused] Who?

Atreyu: Falkor, you shouldn't have let him!

  • Atreyu: We need weapons.

Bastian Bux: I wish for... a spray can!

[a can appears in his hand]

Atreyu: That's a weapon in your world?

Bastian Bux: Yeah. People use it against walls.

Atreyu: Those walls must be dangerous.

  • Bastian Bux: You saved my life, Atreyu.

Atreyu: Yes. But you would have done the same for me.

Bastian Bux: [after a pause] Sure.

  • Bastian Bux: [after the dragon has escaped] What are we gonna do?

    Atreyu: Chase it!

Falkor: Chase? Did somebody say chase?

  • Rockbiter: Bastian, in your world, if the Neverending Story is fading, no child will ever know about Junior.

Atreyu: They will never ride the prairie with me?

Falkor: And they'll never ride through the clouds with me?

Rockbiter: If humans forget about us, nobody will think of fun things for Junior to do.

    Bastian Bux: NO!

[Bastian goes silent for a few seconds]

Bastian Bux: We won't let that happen.

  • Atreyu: [as they reach the castle] Do you remember what to say?

    Bastian Bux: Yeah.

    Atreyu: Make it loud.

Bastian Bux: [quietly] The Earthling, Bastian Balthazar Bux, and Atreyu, the warrior from the Great Plains...

Atreyu: [curiously] Is that what you call 'loud' in your world?

Bastian Bux: [shouts louder] The Earthling, Bastian Balthazar Bux, and Atreyu, the warrior from the Great Plains, demand to see the master of this castle!

Atreyu: That should get somebody's attention.

    [huge rumbling occurs]

Bastian Bux: Guess whose? Atreyu, they make strong gates in Fantasia, don't they?

  • Bastian Bux: I can tell when someone lies to me.

Atreyu: And I can tell when someone is up to no good.

  • Falkor: Well, from what you tell me, the Emptiness has found its way into Bastian's head.

Atreyu: It's Auryn, isn't it? It works differently with humans than with us.

    Falkor: Because humans need memories.

Atreyu: [goes stunned] So what I saw... was a memory!

  • Bastian Bux: Thief!

Atreyu: I've come to warn you!

    Bastian Bux: Liar!

Atreyu: Don't you EVER say that to me!

Bastian Bux: But it's the truth! You're jealous because I have Auryn and you've come to take it away from me!

    Atreyu: No, I have not!

Bastian Bux: I overheard you talking to Falkor, so don't even try to make excuses!

Atreyu: You've gone mad, Bastian! Give me Auryn!

Bastian Bux: [holds it] She wants ME to have it. You don't understand nothing. Why don't you just go back and play with your buffaloes, country boy!

Atreyu: Why don't you go back and play hero in your own world, Earthling!

    [he pauses]

Atreyu: Bastian, every time you use Auryn, you lose one of your memories. Xayide has a - a machine that collects them.

Bastian Bux: [in disbelief] I would've seen it! I've been in the...

Atreyu: I have seen it - it is in the roof of the Xobile. A few more wishes, and the Emptiness will possess you! Now, give me Auryn before it's too late.

Bastian Bux: Take it if you can.

[Atreyn and Bastian get in a severe struggle until Bastian pushes Atreyn down to the ground, Bastian sees this in shock]

Bastian Bux: YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF!

  • Atreyu: If Bastian's so clever, why can't he see what's happening to him?

Falkor: Bastian is losing himself with every wish.

Atreyu: He must be stopped, or Fantasia is lost!

[Bastian, who is invisible, quietly approaches them]

Atreyu: I'll take Auryn away from him - by force if necessary. He can't be allowed to make one more wish. I'll have to do it tonight. Tomorrow we might all be prisoners of Xayide.

    [Bastian quickly leaves]

Falkor: Now, Atreyu, don't go to him in anger; go and warn him. He's your friend, is he?

Atreyu: You're right. He is my friend.

    [Falkor smiles]

  • Atreyu: Now's your chance. Go!

Bastian Bux: [referring to the giants] But what about them?

Atreyu: It's a good day to die.

Bastian Bux: Please don't say that.
